In March of 2004, Dave Matthews and his bandmates Carter Beauford and Boyd Tinsley performed with The Roots at the 35th Annual NAACP Image Awards. While the members of Dave Matthews Band have performed with everyone from Jimmy Buffett to John Kerry over the years, this collaboration stuck out thanks to its unique live mash-up of The Roots’ “Why (What's Goin On?)” and Dave Matthews Band’s “Crush.” Though the members of The Roots and Dave Matthews Band have crossed paths over the past three years, most notably in early August when Roots drummer ?uestlove made a surprise appearance with Matthews in Camden, NJ, it has been a while since the strange bedfellows collaborated onstage.

But, this weekend, the two groups shared the stage in several unique configurations when The Roots opened for DMB at Troy, WI’s Alpine Valley Music Theatre. First, The Roots Horns backed the evening’s headliner for much of its set, including “Louisiana Bayou,” “Bartender,” “Crash Into Me,” “Dancing Nancies” and “Grey Street.” Then, near the end of Dave Matthews Band’s performance, ?uestlove took the stage to play drums next to Beauford on the new composition “Eh Hee” and Under the Table and Dreaming’s “Warehouse.” A night later, after Dave Matthews Band debuted the new song “A Dream So Real,” the quintet invited out The Roots Horns and Roots guitarist Captain Kirk for “Jimi Thing” and another take on “Eh Hee,” with MC Black Thought also offering a freestyle rap on the later tune. The Roots Horns then helped Dave Matthews and company close its performance with “Sweet Up and Down,” ”Shotgun,” “So Much to Say” and “Too Much.”

Dave Matthews Band will perform at Bonner Springs, KS’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre tomorrow. Umphrey’s McGee will support.
