Late Sunday afternoon, the left-leaning political organization Music for Democracy
hosted the Be the Change Launch Event at New York’s St. Raphael's
Cathedral. In addition to short, acoustic performances by Crosby &
Nash, Vampire Weekend and Israeli singer/songwriter Dan Reed, the
concert boasted appearances by noted pundits David Bender (Air America
Radio) and Jim Dean (Democracy for America), as well as a silent
auction and VIP reception. At the end of the night, Crosby & Nash
invited both Reed and the members of Vampire Weekend onstage for a
spirited rendition of their hippie anthem, “Teach Your Children.”
The
surprise sit-in is the latest victory for indie sensations Vampire
Weekend, a group that has scored an appearance on Saturday Night Live, the cover of Spin
magazine and a nod of approval from David Byrne in the past twelve
months. For Sunday’s performance, Vampire Weekend’s Chris Tomson helped recreate the feel of Graham Nash’s classic arrangement by
switching from drums to mandolin. The group will kick off a European
tour at Birmingham, UK’s Carling Academy on October 20, while Crosby
& Nash will appear at Westbury, NY’s Capital One Bank Theater this
evening.
