The Bowery Residents' Committee has found a new tenant to fill
the spot once occupied by the legendary rock club CBGB. After a long struggle,
CBGB finally closed its doors in October of 2006 with a performance by Patti
Smith & Her Band featuring special guest bassist Flea. After being vacant
for over a year, the building’s owners have confirmed that designer John Varvatos
will open a high end men’s clothing store at 315 Bowery in March of 2008. The announcement symbolizes the wave of gentrification sweeping New York City’s Bowery district. Another
lauded area club, Continental, also closed its doors last year and reopened a
few months later as a sports bar.
315 Bowery’s new tenants will keep the space’s musical flavor
alive, however, and have built a stage into the new room’s blueprints for regular
in-store concerts. In a statement, Varvatos also recalled seeing the Ramones at
CBGB in the 1970s.
The club's longtime owner, Hilly Kristal, died of lung
cancer last August at 75. Before his death, Kristal said he hoped to reopen
CBGB in Las Vegas
in the near future.
