Blind Melon’s recent reunion appears to be somewhat permanent.
The hippie-rock revivalists, who lost lead
singer Shannon Hoon in 1995, are set to release their first album in 13 years
on April 22. For My Friends is the
group’s first studio album to feature new frontman Travis Warren, who has been
touring with original members Rogers Stevens (guitar), Christopher Thorn
(guitar), Brad Smith (bass) and Glen Graham (drums) since mid-2007. The reactivated
Blind Melon is also set to appear at Langerado this March and release a book,
tentatively titled Caramel Cake Covered
Christmas: The Story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon.
Though they scored a surprise hit with the single “No Rain,”
Blind Melon were part of a crop of jam-based rock bands that emerged in the
wake of the Grateful Dead’s surprise hit in 1987. During their short tenor, the
group released the four times platinum Blind
Melon in 1992, the considerably darker Soup
in 1995 and the leftovers collection Nico,
which is dedicated to Hoon’s young daughter. The group tried unsuccessful to
solider on without Hoon, but eventually parted ways in 1996. A decade latter
they reformed and have toured regularly since the fall of 2007.
