Aretha Franklin Joins JVC Jazz Fest Print E-mail

Aretha Franklin will headline the Newport, RI’s JVC Jazz Festival Newport on Saturday, August 9.The veteran festival will take place on August 8 at Newport’s International Tennis Hall Of Fame featuring Chris Botti and Ledisi, as well as August 9-10 at Fort Adams Park. In addition to Franklin, Ledisi and Botti, the festival’s park festivities will feature Wayne Shorter Quartet, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland-Gonzalo Rubalcaba-Chris Potter-Eric Harland, Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band, Charlie Haden-Ethan Iverson-Bill Frisell, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Christian Scott Warren Vache Quintet, Aaron Goldberg Trio, Melody Gardot, Anthony Hamilton, Guillermo Klein Y Los Guachos, Lionel Loueke Trio, Chris Potter's Underground, George Wein and the Newport All-Stars featuring Anat Cohen-Howard Alden, Mark Rapp Band, Empirical and Esperanza Spalding

"We are very excited to have a musical legend like Aretha Franklin headlining the JVC Jazz Festival Newport, one of our most important events," said Tom Shepard, CEO of Festival Network, said in a statement. "Her passionately powerful voice exemplify the level of quality we strive to achieve at all of our festivals."

The festival will also feature a number of unique collaborations: Chris Potter will perform with the Marco Benevento Trio, while Fred Wesley will join both Lettuce and Soulive. Benevento will release his second solo studio album in the coming months, which will focus on the various covers he plays with his trio.
