It now turns out that the editing of Eddie Vedder's speech critical of President Bush during the Lollapalooza webcast has indeed happened on prior occasions. AT&T, which sponsored the Blue Room webcast at Lollapalooza and at other festivals including Bonnaroo, released a statement on Friday explaining, "It's not our intent to edit political comments in webcasts on the AttBlueRoom.com. Unfortunately, it has happened in the past in a handful of cases. We have taken steps to ensure that it won't happen again."
Indeed, it appears that some other creative editing may well have happened at Bonnaroo. Performances by the Flaming Lips, John Butler Trio and The Nightwatchman (aka Tom Morello) may well have been modified in an effort to excise comments directed at the current administration.
A few days after the original incident Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready responded with an essay entitled "Thoughts of an American." He concluded his post to the band's site, by writing, "With that I will leave you with a last quote from the quintessential American "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." This is an example of my belief in what Ed was saying the night we were censored during Daughter. You can't get more American than Mark Twain!!! Say no to censorship, it leads to dictatorship!"
