Kaki King
...until we felt red
Velour
With colors coming from just about every direction, guitarist/singer Kaki King continues to press her artistic advantage. Listen to such delicacies as "First Brain," "Yellowcake" and "You Don't Have to Be Afraid" and you're subject to mesmerization: gentle rhythms, unusual and unique chordal splashes, unconventional production values (foreground and background don't exist, beginnings and ends are indeterminate, acoustic versus electric get jumbled).
But it's not all soothe and smooth. The title track, for one, may start out that way, but King's also got a rock 'n' roll animal in her that can blast away with the best of them. With selective singing that most often coos and guitar playing that remains fresh (think Fahey, ECM-era Bill Connors, Michael Hedges, Pat Martino circa mid-'70s), ... until we felt red comes highly recommended.
