David Ford
I Sincerely Apologise for All the Trouble I've Caused
Independiente/Columbia
Damien Rice has made a crucial error. In making fans of his 2003 debut wait over three years for a follow-up, he's given upstarts like 27-year-old countryman David Ford a chance to come in and steal his gig. Okay, Ford isn't necessarily a Rice replica, but the two share a propensity for plaintive intonations and well-placed female backing vocals. In place of whispers, though, Ford opts for bombast.
(No better proof being the employment of his local football club, Team Sundry, to join in on the coda for the cynical chantey "Cheer Up (You Miserable Fuck)." Independently recorded before he was signed to Columbia, Ford had the luxury of recording his nine-song debut with no A&R man to tell him an eight-minute song won't get radio play. The freedom was surely to the album's benefit. Much like Dylan's early work, these pieces (lyrically rife with letdown, disillusion, corruption and loneliness) need space to breathe and build. To his credit, even six minutes in, Ford knows how to keep things interesting. Leigh Belz
