WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
Noah Chernin first befriended drummer Ryan Thornton while tour-managing his longtime band RANA. After sharing some songs, the duo began frequenting New York’s downtown clubs and, soon after, added Chernin’s college pal Jack Dolgen to the mix. “We didn’t have the name until a few hours before our first gig,” Chernin says of Sam Champion’s moniker, a nod to a New York-area weatherman. “We played the Stones’ ‘Dead Flowers,’ ‘She’s the One’ by The Ramones and some others. I didn’t own an electric guitar or amp, so I borrowed both from Scott Metzger.” Since then the trio has picked up lead guitarist Sean Sullivan and settled on a loose rock and roll sound that finds a comfortable ground between ‘70s rock and modern indie, as documented on the group’s sophomore effort, Heavenly Bender. “We are striving to build a fanbase that would drive eight hours to see us play or talk about us all day on the internet. But, at the same time, the fickleness of some jamband fans who like jambands just cause they are bands that jam… that doesn’t work for me. There’s a million different ways to write songs and a million more ways to jam.” www.samchampionband.com
