WORLD TROUBADOUR
“To me it’s not a career,” says British born,French-raised singer/songwriterPiers Faccini. The 36-year-old means it, too—up until about ten years ago, he was strictly a painter, having attended art school in Paris. “I was passing my days not seeing anyone,” says Faccini of his visual art heyday. As a means of social engagement, he started shyly performing songs that he had let gestatein his solitude. Initially getting together with a band, he struck out on his own, releasing his solo debut in2004. While much of what Faccini creates is similar in vein to friends like Jack Johnson and Ben Harper and British folk heroes like Nick Drake he delineates his sound through subtle incorporations of West African and Indian influence. His latest, Tearing Sky, showcases it all, though it by no means does his live performance—where his guitar playing stretches out and his vocal range soars from a near growl to an angelic, traditional Pakistani-like affectation—justice. Says Faccini, “If you don’t feel like what you’re doing is in some way unique, then why bother doing it?” www.piersfancini.com
