GOOD VIBES
Percussionist/vocalist/vibes freak Mike Dillon made his name playing in hard-edgedexperimental groups like Billy Goat and jamming with musicians like Les Claypool,Skerik and the Benevento-Russo Duo and, while in between tours, recruited bassist/vocalist JJ Jungle and drummer/vocalist Go-Go Ray for a gig at Kansas City’s Davey’s Uptown in March of 2006. The results clicked and, since then, his Go-Go Jungle has slowly perfected the series of bluesy funk songs featured on its debut album, Battery Milk. “I don’t have a keyboardist or a guitar player to fall back on, so it’s sort of all on the vibes and the bass,” Dillon admits. “JJ can create a nice wall of sound and get the big rock happening, but it was really terrifying to step out and try to do it as a trio.” Though his busy schedule precludes the Go-Go Jungle from touring full time, Dillon continues to write and play with the vibes-centric trio whenever his calendar allows. “When I started the Go-Go Jungle, I wanted it to have some songs with vocals, but I also wanted us to be a vibraphone trio with some weird, wacky sounds. When I’m at home, I just sit around, ideas come up and then I’m like ‘alright, let’s realize this.’” www.myspace.com/mikedillonsgogojungle
