SOUND GRAPHICS
Before Cold War Kids was a band, it was a concept. “When we got
together, our bassist Matt [Maust] was already a graphic designer using
the Cold WarKids concept,” says pianist Nathan Willett. “We incorporate
those ideas into our music. It’s about creating a cool image: growing up in this
wartime society.” Since coming together in California in late 2004, Willett,
Maust, drummer Matt Aveiro and guitarist Jonnie Russell have
continued to develop the concept, creating an infectious sound which nods to
such artists as Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday and The Velvet Underground. After
releasing a series of homespun EPs, Cold War Kids earned the attention of fellow
buzz bands like Editors, Two Gallants, Sound Team and Tapes ‘n Tapes, which put
the quartetin front of an eager, blog-centric audience before the release of its
proper debut, Robbers & Cowards. Maust continues to act as the Cold War
Kids’chief graphic designer, adding his unique thumbprint to the group’s
website, album covers and supplemental books. “We’ve continued to enhance the
live show over the past two years,” says Willett. “Recently we even added some
slides as a backdrop.” www.coldwarkids.com - Mike Greenhaus
