OUT OF THE FRIDGE
“I know the term singer/songwriter conjures up bad images, but that’s really what I am,” admits English wunderkind Adem. “People toss around the phrase nu-folk but it’s a bit of a misnomer. My lyrics aren’t informed by popular experience.” But that’s not to say the multi-instrumentalist hasn’t lived a colorful life. Adem began performing as a schoolchild, eventually forming the experimental rock trio Fridge with Sam Jeffers and Kieran Hebden (who now records as Four Tet). After releasing a series of cult hits and backing Badly Drawn Boy, Adem ventured out under his own name, armed with a dense mix of indie, folk and electronica originals. And, while he’s quick to point out that Fridge was an instrumental collective because “none of us could really sing,” Adem has grown into a powerful vocalist. “I had my producer’s hat on and laid down some temporary vocals, but as I began working on my singing they stuck. I really try to make a personal, genuine record which is open-ended and captures a collective experience.” www.adem.tv
