With Ween's Dean Ween

Welcome to the fourth installment of Vegoose Deuce! Find out what your favorite artists have to say about Vegas, Elvis, and knowing when to fold 'em.

This week: 10 Questions With Dean Ween of Ween. With Ween's Dean Ween

Describe your favorite trip to Vegas. The first time we played Vegas in '91 or '92. We were going for a Hunter Thompson kind of thing. We rolled in there swirling out of our minds! There was this record store in Las Vegas which was involved in promoting our show. They had this party for us and were going to carve us a leg of lamb or something. Ween wasn't very popular back then. So, we are in this sorry-ass state, but we get into this record store and there are 100 people whose attention is focused only on us. They put in this video of this guy carving the word WEEN with an Exacto knife and we're like tripping. We screamed, had a tantrum and ran out.

The weirdest thing you've seen from the stage is? The weirdest thing that I've from the stage I've actually seen three times, and that's lactating women spraying titty milk on us. It's happened on three different occasions which, if you think about it, is pretty weird. I've seen people in every state of being fucked up and a thousand fights but I'd still go with the lactating women. Though, after three times, it's almost business as usual.

One Vegoose band I'd love to collaborate with is? The Meters.

What is the worst thing about living on a tour bus? The fact that you lose the freedom to eat the things you like. I don't like eating shitty food like Denny's, McDonalds, things like that. But there has to be some solidarity on a bus. Its not like you can be on the highway outside of Tulsa and go like, "Does everyone feel like Thai food?" Like, maybe you'll get Subway. I think I would enjoy touring a whole like more if I was in Bruce Springsteen's band and could say to the caterer, "Hi can you make me veal tonight?"

What is the biggest misconception about your band? That we don't take what we do very seriously.

When is the first time you noticed a hippie at your show? We always had hippies, but a different breed of hippie. We had older, long-haired music fans. I think people equate hippie with these college kids that are into the jamband scene. But those aren't hippies. Those are college kids that are into the jamband scene. They might have the scrub, the tie-dye and the stink but, to me, a hippie is about 50 years old now.

What's the best concert you've seen in the last year? Prince. But that's been the case for like 25 years. I've been seeing him for years. He played this huge show at an arena in Philadelphia. All I listen to is old music [laughs].

If you were to cover an Elvis song which one would it be? Ha! So many great songs. "Burning Love." It's the most uniquely "Elvis" song. It's just so macho and masculine. Only a real fucking man could get away with singing that song. I could only think of three people who could get away with it: Tom Jones, Elvis and... wait, only two people. It takes a real man to deliver a song like that with conviction.

What's the longest you've gone without sleeping? A lot of times I've done two or three nights straight. But one time, from England to Italy! We flew into London, played MTV over there and had to drive straight without any sleep. I was awake for a couple days and we were driving. There was no place to lay your head.

Any words of advice for aspiring poker players? Quit the game. I got friends who are really fucking strung out on poker. All they do is gamble on the internet and watch it on TV.

Ween plays the Snake Eyes stage at Vegoose, Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas, NV on Sunday, October 30
