Since starring in the iconic stoner comedy Half Baked, Jim Breuer has unexpectedly become a jamband icon. Known for abrasive roles like “Goat Boy,” Breuer spent three years on Saturday Night Live before venturing into feature films as unlucky pothead Brian in Half Baked. Despite confessing his love for metal, the popular comedian has since immersed himself in the jam-rock world, hosting the Jammys in 2001 and, this year, headlining Bonnaroo’s comedy tent. Before heading to Bonnaroo, Breuer answered a few quick questions about his first trip to Manchester, TN. Have you ever been to a hippie-rock festival before?

Never. A lot of people have this misconception that I am the “hippie guy.” To show you what lack of knowledge I have, after I did Half Baked they asked me to be a judge at the Cannabis Cup and I said, “I’m not into car racing.”

A few years ago you also hosted the Jammys. Can you talk about that experience?

Yeah, that was a good time. I played with the Derek Trucks Band—it was fun. It was really lax and had a good vibe—a really good vibe. There were no egos flying around. For me, I can’t stand Hollywood and I can’t stand egos. I really don’t care what your accomplishments are—I just care if you can hang.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Absolutely nothing. I’m one of those comics who sees it like going to war: I just show up, look at the battlefield and pick my weapons.

Do you see similarities between the touring life of a comedian and a band?

Absolutely. But I think a band has it much worse. A band has promoters and distributors telling them to go out on tour forever—there are way too many attachments. For me, I can take the entire summer off. But, then again, comics are a little more edgy because we are alone. We have a lot more to lose. If a band goes down, five go down laughing. If a comic goes down, he is alone. It’s like a kid getting the shit kicked out of him in a school yard.

What is your favorite movie role?

Are you kidding—Half Baked was the greatest role ever. I never have to pay for weed anymore [laughs]. I’d love to perform a show in Amersterdam one day.

Last year, Amsterdam actually hosted the Jam in the ‘Dam festival…

I’d love to be part of the jamband thing out there. It has such a great vibe. I’m hoping to spend all three days just chillin’ at Bonnaroo. I just show up and hopefully I’m funny.

What bands are you most excited to see at this year’s Bonnaroo?

I’d like to check out that hot tamale Jack Johnson. I’d also like to see Dave Matthews—I haven’t seen either of them. I’m pretty bad with names. There isn’t really a pop market for most of these bands for me to hear them and that’s a good thing. I’m just really excited to check out the vibe. I’ve always wanted to check out Woodstock and this is the real deal. I plan on pitching a tent and just hanging with people.

What’s the best concert you’ve seen in the last year?

Metallica and U2. When it comes to live concerts I like hard-rock and Metallica—they are always so tight. U2 is also always tight and they put on an amazing show. They're all about the emotion—I’m all about the emotion.

Currently you are also moonlighting as a radio host...

Since November I’ve been hosting a show on Sirius. I love it. We jam on my radio show, actually. When Alan Parsons came on a few weeks ago we just jammed. My show is very similar to the grassroots thing. We don’t care who you are as long as you can hang. We are going to talk about everything—except what you do. Peter Correale, a friend of mine from my radio show, is going to Bonnaroo with me. He’s also going to perform.

What is the most ridiculous thing you’ve done onstage?

Walk out not knowing that toilet paper was still in my ass and hanging from my pants I did it in Atlantic City. A whole line was hanging out of my pants for about 20 minutes. I guess I need a manager to tell me when to wipe.

Who smokes more weed, a Deadhead or a Metal head?

By far a Deadhead. Metal heads like us are more conservative with their weed. We’re far more into our jackets.
